OPEN DAYS AND WEEKENDS - FEEDBACK

These are a few of the comments we have received after recent Open Days.

I've wanted to go into any of the mines under Alderley Edge since reading 'The Weirdstone of Brisingamen' when I was fourteen (27yrs ago). My wife has been visiting Alderley Edge since she can ever remember, it's her favourite place on earth, and our son is named after it. On Sunday we turned up at Alderley Edge on our 10th wedding anniversary weekend, with our children, and found a member of the Derbyshire Caving Club in the car park, advertising an open day. Within minutes we were at the mine, paying the entrance fee!

I also bought "The Alderley Edge Mines" book that was available at the tent on the day. I've only just started reading it properly after skimming through it, but have to say that for anyone with an interest in Alderley Edge, it's a must have.

The guide on the day was very brilliant, very informative, even managing to keep our young kids attention when talking about geology, which is no mean feat considering rocks and cliff faces are something they previously thought were just there for climbing. Although kept as near to their original state as possible -- not sanitized for the public as some are -- it still felt safe to walk/crawl around, and was surprised how there were some points where you could let the children (and adults) crawl around without fear of them disappearing down a hole. It was all obviously well thought out and managed.

I'd recommend the open days without hesitation. It's also worth pointing out that they took card payment on the day for the entrance fee, an absolute godsend when you didn't know there was an open day and are standing in the car park thinking you needed to pay in cash.

To properly enjoy it, wear footwear with good grip, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty (it washes out, honest). This especially applies to kids as trying to stop them crawling around the caves is pointless, and to be honest, it's hard to resist doing so as a sensible adult type...

I went on the Engine Vein tour on Saturday, and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it! It was wonderful to learn about an aspect of the region's history that you don’t usually get to see, and the guides were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I'll definitely be recommending it to friends, and looking out for future tours!

An absolutely fantastic tour around the mines. Well done to all staff who put this on and shared their knowledge with us!

Thank you for a fabulous tour of Engine Vein. (This correspondent said he would tweet some pictures and a video as well.  The video of Sally demonstrating single rope techniques can be viewed here.)

A great tour, yet again. Our guides were so knowledgeable. Looking forward to the next one. This is a must do tour. Thanks guys and girls.

Just a quick note to say how much I and my companions enjoyed our visit to Wood Mine (from Hebden Bridge) yesterday. Apart from the interest of the mine itself, the enthusiasm and knowledge of the tour guides and back-ups was infectious. And my friend greatly enjoyed the crawl; maybe Engine Vein next year, eh...

We would just like to say a big thank you to everyone at the open day, especially our guide Lauren. We had a wonderful trip underground, in honour of Barney's 5th Birthday.

My friends and I had a very entertaining and informative day out, thanks to the efforts of the Derbyshire Caving Club - we're grateful for the opportunity to be introduced to an experience most people will never have.  Thanks to all concerned -

Very good this afternoon. Lighting was spectacular - didn't really need a cap lamp.

Hi,
Just wanted to say thank you for all the organisation and work that went into today. I really enjoyed my trip into Engine Vein.  If you could pass on the attached images to our excellent guide for the day (Can't remember his name) with my thanks and appreciation.  Best wishes,  Michael

Above Crocodile Crawl I went to your open day at Alderley Edge yesterday with my partner and a friend, we all had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a good chat with two of your members about coming again or joining the club ...

April 2010

Hi,
Hope you can help...
Wondered if you had access to any photos of the crocodile crawl in Wood Mine. We came to today's open day and managed to have an extended tour and ended up going through the crocodile crawl.  My two boys are keen to tell the story at school.
