Where am I? DCC > CAVING AND MINING > CAVES > CAVING AREAS > FERMANAGH, CAVAN AND SLIGO
There is some excellent caving in the Fermanagh - Cavan area which straddles the border in the northwest of Ireland. The main base is around Blacklion, a village in the Republic of Ireland and Belcoo a village in Northern Ireland with the nearest large town being Enniskillen. There is a show cave at Marble Arch on the slopes of Cuilcagh mountain, south of Lower Lough MacNean and there are a number of other caves in that area. North of Lower Lough MacNean, there are more caves including Noon's Hole and Reyfad as well as the curious caves of Boho formed in thin-bedded limestone. The nearby Boho Bar, properly called the Linnet Inn, has a replica cave inside the bar! The caving extends further to the west into County Sligo in the Republic where Dermott and Grania's cave can be found high on a hillside. There is also a barytes mine in county Sligo.
One site which is still growing is the Shannon Cave system. This has the unusual characteristic of having entrances in two separate countries. So far, no passport control has been set up underground. In fact, movement around the area and across the border is very easy, the only issue being that one needs both pounds sterling and euros.
