CAVING IN IRELAND

Ireland has extensive areas of limestone from the north to the south.  The main caving areas are in Fermanagh (the west of Northern Ireland), Sligo (in the Republic further west of Fermanagh) and Clare (in the far west of the Republic).  All areas offer exciting caving and dramatic scenery as well as having show caves.  As will be seen from the addresses of the show caves and from the map pins on the map below, karst can be found all around the country although less so in the centre where peat bogs abound.

Books and Journals

There are several excellent books published by UBSS (University of Bristol Speleological Society) covering County Clare in particular. There are also some interesting historical books such as E.A. Baker's "Caving" and Coleman's book "Caves of Ireland".
